Mag Distance/Size
Space
βLengthβ and βsizeβ and βdistanceβ all measure the same physical dimension, but they are subtly different:
- βlengthβ refers to a span across space
- βsizeβ refers to the largest spatial dimension of an object
- βdistanceβ refers to how far away something is from something else (center to center)
Diameter is used for size, because it is closest in spirit to βlengthβ. For a cube-like solid, the size is just the magnitude of the longest side. (The diagonal of a cube would be β0.2 longer, so it generally wonβt make a difference.)
Translating from mag diameter to another mag quantity uses simple logarithmetic. To convert to:
- radius: β-0.3 size
- circumference: β0.5 size
- surface area: 2 x size
- volume: 3 x size
For example, Earth is ββ7 sizeβ and to walk all the way around it would be ββ7.5 distanceβ. And it has ββ14 surface areaβ and ββ21 volumeβ.
The Moon, Earth, Jupiter, and Sun are β6.5, β7, β8, and β9 size, respectively. The distance to the Sun (1 AU) is β11, and the distance to Voyager is β13.
How far is the Moon? We know that it takes seconds (β0 time) to radio the Moon, and since the speed of radio is the speed of light at β8.5, so the Moon is β8.5 distance from Earth.

- β8: to the Moon
- β10 or β11: to Mars
- β11: to the Sun (1 AU)
- β12: to Pluto
- β13.5: to Voyager 1
- β16.5: to Alpha Centauri

Speed is distance over time (m/s), which makes it a half-mag (compressed) scale:
- β-10: continental drift
- β-8: slow glacier
- β-5: glacial pace
- β-3.5: fastest-moving glacier
- β-3: snailβs pace
- β-1: sloth (top speed)
- β0: walking; swimming
- β0.7: running; biking
- β1: road-race cycling
- β1.1: Usain Bolt world record for running
- β1.5: car on highway
- β2: high-speed train; racecar
- β2.5: speed of sound; bullet; jet
- β3: escape velocity from Moon; missiles; thermal neutrons
- β4: escape velocity from Earth
- β4.5: speed of Earth around Sun

- β8: speed of light in diamond
